Topic
For the rest of the year our focus for Inquiry will Big Events. We are brainstorming different types of Big Events and from there will use our developing questioning skills, to come up with ideas for further Inquiry. Some activities will of course be related to the Rugby World Cup as well as the Elections. This will be integrated throughout the subject areas including maths– statistics, literacy, Social Science– Geography, Culture and different Celebrations around the world.
Literacy
Reading- We will continue to work in groups to target specific learning needs. and include phonics / Frequency Words / Stories / Poems. It will be great to see children follow up on these activities at home and practise their frequency words as we discussed at the interviews.
Writing-This term we will begin to learn about writing narratives and character descriptions. This will be great way of introducing new describing and action words and using our imagination to come up with ideas for stories. As well as this we will continue our phonics program revisiting sounds we have learned and practising our handwriting.
Maths
NUMBER: We continue to play maths games to practise our knowledge of numbers. We practise forward and backwards counting, number order, basic facts to 5 and 10. A great game to play is simply using 2 dice and giving the total of them rolled together.
In our Maths groups we work on solving +/- problems by counting all the objects using materials or in our heads and beginning to count on from the larger number.
ALGEBRA: Recognising and following/repeating patterns colour or number.
STATISTICS: We will look at collecting, graphing and reading data relating to the Rugby World Cup and NZ Elections.

This term will be busy preparing for the Fiafia Cultural Concert. Children have been placed into the many different cultural groups and are practising their performance ,for the big event, every Friday afternoon. The groups include the Maori, Tongan, Samoan and Cook Island pacific cultures, as well as Irish and Social dancing , Hot Hula and the very popular Bollywood. It is great to see some children support others in learning music and dance from their own cultures whilst others experience those from different backgrounds than their own.
